Children’s author Laura Elliott was interviewed for BookCast by Fairfax County Public Library Director Sam
Clay.
Laura Malone Elliott, who also writes as L.M. Elliott, is the author of a number of books for preschoolers, middle grade students and young adults. Titles for young adults include Annie Between the States, Under a War-Torn Sky and Give Me Liberty.
Elliott’s first young adult novel, Under a War-torn Sky, a W.W.II story about a B-24 bomber pilot’s experiences with the French Resistance, has also won several awards. Says Booklist: “Packed with action, intrigue, and suspense, this novel celebrates acts of kindness and heroism without glorifying war.” The sequel to Under a War-Torn Sky, A Troubled Peace, will be published in September 2009.
Give Me Liberty, explores the Revolutionary War through the experiences of a 13-year-old indentured servant, a hot-headed apprentice, a loveable, eccentric old schoolmaster and a runaway slave in Williamsburg.
Elliott’s books for younger readers include Flying South, set during the upheavals of 1968 and a picture book series, with titles such as Hunter’s Best Friend at School and Hunter and Stripe and the Soccer Showdown.
A long-time writer for the Washingtonian magazine, Elliott was twice a finalist for a National Magazine Award and wrote often on children, women’s issues and health. Elliott graduated from Wake Forest University and completed a Master’s in Journalism at the University of North Carolina. Elliott lives in Virginia with her husband, their two children and a herd of pets.
