Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation Supports Children’s Financial Education via donation to Fairfax Library Foundation for New Oakton Library

Check presentation.Fairfax, VA –The Northwest Federal Credit Union Foundation (NWFCU Foundation) donated children’s financial education themed books to the Fairfax Library Foundation for the new Oakton Library on October 24 in celebration of Fairfax Library Foundation month.  The NWFCU Foundation donated five sets of Sammy ‘the Saver’ Rabbit books written by Sam X. Renick, and musical CDs for the Fairfax County Public Library branches.

Juri Valdov, NWFCU President/CEO and NWFCU Foundation Chairman, presented the materials plus a five hundred dollar financial donation to Roberta Longworth, Executive Director of the Fairfax Library Foundation. “One of our key missions is providing financial education in the community, and we couldn’t have a better partner for achieving this goal than the Fairfax Library Foundation and the staff of this beautiful library [Oakton],” said Valdov.

Others on hand for the occasion included Linda Rogus and Laura Dawson of NWFCU Foundation; Courtney Bulger and Martina Murphy of the Fairfax Library Foundation and local library customers. Jerilyn Polson, Oakton Library Branch Manager, gave a tour of the system’s 22nd branch which recently opened on September 29.  It is the first county library designed using Leadership in Energy and Environment (LEED) principles developed by the US Green Building Council.

The Oakton library book donation was part of NWFCU Foundation’s financial education outreach day which included visits by Sammy Rabbit to Louise Archer and Oakton Elementary Schools in Vienna and Oakton, Virginia respectively.  At each school, Sammy hosted assemblies with the students on the importance of reading and saving money.  Author Renick stressed to the children Sammy Rabbit’s mottos, ‘for every dollar, save a dime,’ and ‘it’s a habit, Sammy Rabbit!’  NWFCU’s Sammy Rabbit tour concluded by marching in the 61st Vienna Halloween Parade with NWFCU’s float which won first place in its category in the well attended community parade.
